Embracing Art and Culture on Block Island

Deep into the summer on Block Island, the town comes alive not only with natural beauty but also with a vibrant tapestry of art and culture. The summer brings a plethora of events and highlights that celebrate creativity, heritage, and community spirit. Whether you’re an art enthusiast, a history buff, or simply seeking inspiration, Block Island has something special in store for you.

Art Exhibitions and Galleries

Block Island boasts a thriving art scene, with numerous galleries showcasing the work of local and visiting artists. July offers a prime opportunity to explore these artistic havens and immerse yourself in a world of creativity. From paintings and sculptures to photography and mixed media, there’s a diverse array of artistic expressions to discover. Some galleries we suggest are Greenaway Photography, Jessie Edwards Studio, Spring Street Gallery, and D. Chatowsky Art Gallery.

Along with the brick-and-mortar galleries, there are also several pop-up art events that can be also found on the island. Several Sundays throughout the summer, the Block Island Arts & Crafts Guild holds their Outdoor Markets at the Block Island Historical Society. Along with paintings and photography, guild members also have sculpture, jewelry, fabric arts, candles, and more for sale. There’s also the annual Block Island Arts and Artisans Festival, being held August 10-12 this year. This larger festival, held on the lawns of the Narragansett Inn, draws artisans from all around to display their beautiful paintings, pottery, jewelry, photography and other handmade pieces.

Live Performances and Cultural Events

Summer on Block Island is synonymous with lively entertainment and cultural festivities. Whether you’re into music, dance, or film, there’s something for everyone to enjoy. Keep an eye out for concerts at venues like the Captain Nick’s, Yellow Kittens, and others, where talented musicians visit every summer. For some music against the sound of the ocean waves, Blues on the Beach is held on several Wednesdays throughout the summer at Fred Benson Town Beach from 5pm-7pm. All shows are free and for all ages! For classical music fans, the Eastern Connecticut Symphony Orchestra comes to Champlin’s on August 15. A reception with mocktails, cocktails, and hors d’ oeuvres begin at 5:00 with the performance at 6:00pm.

For film lovers, there are options as well! For a more traditional cinema experience, be sure to check out the historic Empire Theatre for recently released Hollywood blockbusters. For a slightly unique movie viewing, head down to the Town Beach Pavilion for Soundwaves: Movies on the Beach, where visitors can enjoy the sound of the ocean with film classics from the past.

Cultural Heritage and Historical Tours:

Beyond its natural beauty, Block Island is steeped in history and heritage, with a fascinating story waiting to be uncovered. Summer presents an ideal opportunity to delve into the island’s past through guided tours and educational programs.

Take a stroll through the historic district of Old Harbor and explore iconic landmarks such as the Southeast Lighthouse and the Block Island Historical Society Museum.
