2024 Block Island Winter Getaway
A common misconception about Block Island is that it’s strictly a summer destination. While it’s true that a vast majority of our visitors make their way to the island in the warmer months, they’re missing out on some excellent experiences during the off-season.
Contrary to popular belief, the island doesn’t completely shut down in the winter. A handful of our inns, restaurants, and shops are open year-round. There are also the stunning natural spaces of Block Island that the snowy months transform into a winter wonderland.
If a little peace and quiet sounds appealing to you in the next few months, we’ve compiled a brief guide on planning your Block Island Winter Getaway.
Before You Go
Before you pack up your things and make your way to the Pt Judith ferry, there are a few things to keep in mind about traveling to Block Island during the off-season. Obviously in the winter months you’re going to experience cold weather. However, the island is unique in the sense that it tends to get different weather patterns than the mainland. Plan accordingly for snow, rain, or an unseasonably warm day.
Speaking of weather, while it might be a mildly breezy day at your home, the ocean conditions might be much more turbulent. Be sure to check our website for important announcements regarding reschedules and cancelations due to inclement weather.
We would also suggest that you visit the Block Island Chamber of Commerce website (www.blockislandchamber.com) when planning your trip. The Chamber keeps an up-to-date listing of the various businesses on the island that are currently open as well as their hours and contact information. It’s a very handy resource!
Where to Stay
While many hotels and inns on the island close for the winter, there are a few that offer accommodations year-round. Island staples such as the 1661 Inn, the Inn at Spring House, the Blue Dory Inn and Avonlea, and others still have rooms to rent. Be sure to check out their websites for pricing and night minimums. You also have the option to book a handful of apartments and homes all over the island through various online sites such as Airbnb and Vrbo. These are especially good options if you plan on traveling with a group of people and would like to stay together.
Where to Eat
Regardless of the time of day, you’ll always find some delicious eats on the island. For breakfast, you can grab a hearty meal at the recently opened Ellen’s at the Airport or something a little lighter at Odd Fellows Café. For lunch and dinner options, check out McAloon’s and the Old Island Pub. If you want something a little fancier, The Barn at The Spring House has a lovely, curated winter menu from their chef, Brian Hebert. Looking to grab something to go or bring back to your room? Bodega, above Poor People’s Pub, has snacks, coffee, and even takeaway items like Sammys and pizza. You can also grab your own ingredients at Block Island Grocery and Red Bird Liquor Store.
What to See
It should go without saying that Block Island has some of the most stunning natural spaces in the area. While most of these areas are normally explored by our visitors in the summer, the winter is a unique and beautiful time to take in these sites. The lack of crowds will give you the feeling of having the space all to yourself. Be sure to hike the many trails around the island and make some time to visit the Mohegan Bluffs.
If you’re more of an indoor type, there are a few businesses open for a little shopping. Pick up your new favorite book and Island Bound Bookstore. Wander over to Mutt Hutt to get a little something for that four-legged friend of yours. Buy some local art at Jessie Edwards Studio. Be sure to check out the Block Island Chamber’s website for a listing of opening stores and their hours.
Block Island is known as one of the best summer destinations in the area. However, winter is also a great time to take break from the hustle and bustle of the regular world. So, the next time you start craving a little quiet and calmness, consider giving us a visit. You won’t be disappointed.
